Forensic Gait Analysis

Forensic gait analysis is the analysis, comparison and evaluation of features of gait to assist the investigation of crime.

Gait

A manner of walking or moving on foot

(merriam-Webster dictionary)

Gait analysis

The systematic study of animal locomotion.

Evaluation of the manner or style of walking, usually done by observing the individual walking naturally in a straight line.

Based around the use of video recordings, forensic gait analysis can assist in the identification of individuals believed to be present at a particular scene. Using qualitative analysis to evaluate the walking style of an individual, Canadian Forensic Podiatry Services will take you through the whole process from video to the court room.

Process

Strictly adhering to the sound "ACE/V" methodology widely utilized in the forensic sciences, the Analysis, Comparison, Evaluation and Verification processes are followed diligently by Canadian Forensic Podiatry Services.

Beginning with an initial consultation we will work with the investigators to determine what type of evidence you are wishing to have examined and how Canadian Forensic Podiatry Services can help. A detailed explanation of our services will ensure you are fully informed as to how Forensic Gait Analysis works.

We will review your initial "questioned" video footage and an assessment will be made as to the suitability for its use in forensic gait analysis. We will fully explain our findings and will provide a detailed report as to our conclusions. At this stage of the analysis our decision will be final as to whether to proceed to a full forensic gait analysis.
If we proceed to the full Forensic Gait Analysis the questioned footage will be reviewed, then following the ACE/V methodology a conclusion shall be reached resulting in a final report. All notes and computer-based analysis will be made available to you for disclosure purposes.

If at this time "reference" footage is available, a repeat of this process shall be done independently of the questioned footage. If there is no questioned footage available, or lacks the quality to be used further, Canadian Forensic Podiatry Services can work with you, providing you with advice on how to get that reference footage.

A draft report (bench notes) will be completed and held by Canadian Forensic Podiatry Services until the verification phase has been completed. At this stage, an independent verifier of equal or greater experience in forensic gait analysis will complete their own analysis using the same provided video footage. When an independent verification is completed a final full detailed report will be produced.

Canadian Forensic Podiatry Services are proud to be part of a global network of forensic gait examiners and all verifications are performed by knowledgeable and vastly experienced practitioners
